The early paintings on this site were made between 2016 and 2019. I learned by doing – through looking, trial, uncertainty, painting, scraping, erasing, searching, and discovery. The works were made on Gorumna Island, where the surrounding landscape could not help but shape how I saw. Light, weather, colour, space, and rhythm were my teachers.
Through these paintings, my attention gradually shifted away from things themselves and toward the space they inhabit. Since then, the work has continued as a process of discovery.
Space is something you experience – something you feel rather than see – formed through how colour, shape, scale, and placement relate to one another, like magnets drawn together, and through the action that takes place between shapes, tones, and colours: the give-and-take, the back-and-forth, until finally, the governed space takes on a life of its own.
